Expanding Single Brackets
Example 1
i) 5(𝑥 + 4) = 5x + 20
ii) 3(4 − 2𝑥) = 12 – 6x
Example: 3(2x – 5) + 5(3x +6) = 3(2x) – 3(5) + 5(3x) + 5(6) (using the Order of Operations, BIDMAS)
= 6x – 15 + 15x + 30
Now you can combine the like terms:
6x + 15x = 21x and -15 + 30 = 15
Final answer: 3(2x – 5) + 5(3x + 6) = 21x + 15
Your Turn: Multiply out and simplify
a) 5(3x – 2y) b) 5(2x + 7) – 2 c) 2(3z + 5) + 3(z – 2) d) 2(5x – 3y) + 3(2x + 5y).
e) Expand: 10z(5z+3) f) Expand: 3𝑥(𝑥 − 2) g) Expand: 4𝑦(2𝑥 + 10)
h) Expand: 8𝑥(5 − 4𝑥)
