GCSE English: Using Narrative Hooks in Your Writing
Objective:
To understand different types of narrative hooks and practise using them to start an engaging piece of writing.
What is a Narrative Hook?
A narrative hook is the opening of a story designed to grab the reader’s attention and make them want to read on.
Task 1: Match the Hook Type with Its Description
Hook Type | Description |
a) Visual Hook | A. Begins with an unusual or striking image to set the scene |
b) Funny Hook | B. Starts with something humorous, quirky, or unexpected |
c) Direct Speech Hook | C. Uses dialogue to drop the reader straight into a situation or conflict |
d) Intriguing Hook | D. Poses a mystery or question to create curiosity |
Task 2: Identify the Hook
Read the following openings and identify the type of hook used (Visual, Funny, Direct Speech, Intriguing):
- “You’ve lost the dog? Again?”

Choose one of the following prompts or invent your own. Write three different openings, each using a different hook type.
